Local banks

Need to cash a check or change your foreign money in Mazatlán. Mexico has very reliable banks are some are listed below.

Now for visitors to access ATM’s. Bancomer ATM’s are now in the Cirrus and PLUS systems, and as well they have Spanish/English language menu systems. Some ATM machines will even give you pesos or dollars. Money is usually changed at casas de cambio (exchange houses) which are open longer hours and offer quicker service. Although dollars are widely accepted in resort areas (and often preferred), we recommend using pesos during your stay due to conversion at a high rate. Also the worst exchange rates are often at hotels, the best at exchange houses. Expect a slightly lower rate for travelers checks. Exchange fees are generally not charged. Credit cards are widely accepted, with Visa and MasterCard being the cards of choice. American Express is also widely accepted. When checking into hotels, clients are often asked for a credit card for incidental charges, and asked to sign a blank charge slip. This is a common practice and should not be viewed with suspicion.

The phone numbers listed here is for the local office of the company.
When dialing the local number from the U.S. or Canada, always dial 011 52 (669) before the number shown.

In 1982 Bancomer was nationalized when President José López Portillo nationalized the country’s banking system. In 1991 during the presidency of Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Bancomer was again privatized when a group of investors led by Eugenio Garza Lagüera bought the major stocks of the bank. In July 2000 it affiliated to Spain’s Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, thus the BBVA in its name. This bank serves over 11 million customers, has 1,704 bank locations, and 4,286 ATMs. It represents 30% of the total revenues of BBVA worldwide, making it the biggest bank of the group outside Spain.
